Ingredients
To make rice cooker cumin rice, you need the following items:
- Rice - I use Basmati rice for this rice cooker recipe for its aroma and fluffy texture, but any long-grain rice can be used. Usually, I prefer to soak the rice before cooking, but I use unsoaked rice in this recipe.
- Cumin seeds - Add aroma and aid digestion.
- Salt - As per taste.
- Garam masala - Optional, a blend of ground spices commonly used in Indian cuisine. The purpose is flavour and aroma.
- Ghee - Optional, but I observed the following three benefits of adding ghee to the rice:
- Firstly, it allows the cumin flavor to infuse deeply into the rice as it cooks.
- Secondly, it coats each grain with a thin layer of fat, helping keep the rice separate and non-sticky.
- Lastly, it definitely elevates the overall flavor, just like in this ghee bhuna chicken recipe, where ghee plays a key role in enhancing both aroma and taste.

How to make cumin rice in a rice cooker?
Rinse the Basmati rice thoroughly under water until the water runs clear. This step is optional, but I prefer to rinse the rice before cooking to remove any dirt if present.
Add rice, water, cumin seeds, salt, garam masala, and ghee to the rice cooker. Stir well. Turn on the rice cooker. Close the lid, select the cook function, and allow it to cook.
Once the rice is cooked, most rice cookers will automatically switch to the "Warm" mode.
When the rice is done, turn off the rice cooker. Stir or toss the rice gently with a spatula to separate the grains (as I did in the video). This helps to avoid clumping and ensures a light, airy texture and non-sticky rice.
Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro and serve it with your favorite dish!

FAQ
Yes, you can use any type of rice to make cumin rice, but basmati rice is preferred for its fragrant aroma and fluffy texture.
Yes, you can skip rinsing rice before cooking. I prefer to rinse it as it helps remove excess starch, makes the rice non-sticky, fluffier, and each grain separated. Additionally, it removes any dirt if present.
Soaking the rice for 15–20 minutes helps the grains absorb some water in advance, which shortens the cooking time and promotes even cooking. However, if you're in a hurry, you can skip the soaking step—just be sure to add a little extra water while cooking.
I generally use a 2:1 water-to-rice ratio when the rice has been soaked beforehand. If the rice is unsoaked, I add an extra half cup of water to compensate. For instance, in this recipe, I used 3½ cups of water for 1½ cups of unsoaked rice.
My top tip for making fluffy rice!
Use warm water to achieve fluffy, non-sticky grains.
Tips
- Basmati rice works best for its aroma and fluffy texture, but any long-grain rice can be used.
- Avoid too much water. Use the correct rice-to-water ratio to ensure the grains don't turn mushy.
- Swap ghee with any neutral cooking oil for a plant-based version (vegan option).
