Jeera rice, or cumin rice, is a fragrant and flavorful dish that pairs beautifully with lentils, curries, and vegetables. The aroma of cumin seeds combined with perfectly fluffy rice makes this recipe a must-have for comfort food. Making rice in a rice cooker is easy and guarantees consistency every time.

I'm so addicted to the convenience of a rice cooker that I can't think of life without this super useful and handy kitchen appliance. It saves me time as I can do multiple tasks simultaneously. Whether you're cooking cumin rice for a weekday meal or a special gathering using a rice cooker, this simple recipe will surely become a favorite in your kitchen!

Rice is a staple in many kitchens, and while cumin rice is one of the simplest and most flavorful versions, I also love making Bombay chicken biryani for special occasions or pumpkin rice when I crave something cozy and yummy.

Reasons to make cumin rice in rice cooker

  1. Texture - The rice cooker makes cumin rice perfectly non-sticky and fluffy, with each grain separated.
  2. Consistency - It ensures perfectly cooked rice every time without worrying about burning or undercooking.
  3. Ease of preparation - It is perfect for anyone, including those who don't know how to cook.
  4. Fail-proof - Making jeera rice in a rice cooker is quick, easy, and almost foolproof.
  5. Convenient - After adding ingredients, the rice cooker is set on cooking mode, and it does the work for you, leaving you free to do the other tasks.
  6. Energy-efficient- Rice cookers consume less energy than a stovetop, making them the best option for daily cooking.
  7. Easy cleanup -Rice cookers come with non-stick bowls, making cleanup quick and hassle-free.

Ingredients

To make rice cooker cumin rice, you need the following items:

ingredients to make cumin rice in a rice cooker.
  1. Rice - I use Basmati rice for this rice cooker recipe for its aroma and fluffy texture, but any long-grain rice can be used. Usually, I prefer to soak the rice before cooking, but I use unsoaked rice in this recipe.
  2. Cumin seeds - Add aroma and aid digestion.
  3. Salt - As per taste.
  4. Garam masala - Optional, a blend of ground spices commonly used in Indian cuisine. The purpose is flavour and aroma.
  5. Ghee - Optional, but I observed the following three benefits of adding ghee to the rice:
    • Firstly, it allows the cumin flavor to infuse deeply into the rice as it cooks.
    • Secondly, it coats each grain with a thin layer of fat, helping keep the rice separate and non-sticky.
    • Lastly, it definitely elevates the overall flavor, just like in this ghee bhuna chicken recipe, where ghee plays a key role in enhancing both aroma and taste.

How to make cumin rice in a rice cooker?

Rinse the Basmati rice thoroughly under water until the water runs clear. This step is optional, but I prefer to rinse the rice before cooking to remove any dirt if present.

Add rice, water, cumin seeds, salt, garam masala, and ghee to the rice cooker. Stir well. Turn on the rice cooker. Close the lid, select the cook function, and allow it to cook.

Once the rice is cooked, most rice cookers will automatically switch to the "Warm" mode.

When the rice is done, turn off the rice cooker. Stir or toss the rice gently with a spatula to separate the grains (as I did in the video). This helps to avoid clumping and ensures a light, airy texture and non-sticky rice.

Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro and serve it with your favorite dish!

Ideas for leftover jeera rice

  • Turn this rice cooker cumin rice into delicious lemon-flavoured rice by mixing it with homemade lemon rice paste.
  • Mix leftover jeera rice with creamy yogurt or mix vegetable raita to make curd rice for a refreshing, tangy, creamy rice.
  • Mix them with breadcrumbs, grated cheese, eggs, and fry to make rice patties.
  • Add cucumber nutty salad to the leftover cumin rice cooked in a rice cooker for sweet, savory, nutty, and crunchy flavors.

Serving Suggestions

Jeera rice is incredibly versatile and pairs well with several dishes. Here are a few serving ideas:

  • Serve it with lentils like yellow lentils, white lentils for a comforting meal.
  • Pair it with egg fry masala and mixed paneer; these aromatic, spiced recipes complement the earthy aroma of cumin rice perfectly.
  • It complements well curries such as rajma curry, chickpeas curry, curried green peas, paneer masala, potato curry, butter chicken, mixed vegetables, matar mushroom masala, etc.
  • Add raita such as cucumber raita, boondi raita, mixed veg raita for a light and refreshing meal.

FAQ

Can I cook cumin rice using any type of rice?

Yes, you can use any type of rice to make cumin rice, but basmati rice is preferred for its fragrant aroma and fluffy texture.

Can I skip rinsing rice?

Yes, you can skip rinsing rice before cooking. I prefer to rinse it as it helps remove excess starch, makes the rice non-sticky, fluffier, and each grain separated. Additionally, it removes any dirt if present.

Do I need to soak the rice before cooking?

Soaking the rice for 15–20 minutes helps the grains absorb some water in advance, which shortens the cooking time and promotes even cooking. However, if you're in a hurry, you can skip the soaking step—just be sure to add a little extra water while cooking.

How much water is required to cook rice in a rice cooker?

I generally use a 2:1 water-to-rice ratio when the rice has been soaked beforehand. If the rice is unsoaked, I add an extra half cup of water to compensate. For instance, in this recipe, I used 3½ cups of water for 1½ cups of unsoaked rice.

My top tip for making fluffy rice!

Use warm water to achieve fluffy, non-sticky grains.

Tips

  1. Basmati rice works best for its aroma and fluffy texture, but any long-grain rice can be used.
  2. Avoid too much water. Use the correct rice-to-water ratio to ensure the grains don't turn mushy.
  3. Swap ghee with any neutral cooking oil for a plant-based version (vegan option).
