Fresh peas vs. frozen peas

Nothing compares to fresh produce, but I still prefer using frozen peas as a fantastic alternative since they require no shelling and cook quickly.

There's no need to thaw them beforehand as they go straight into the pan and cook within minutes, ensuring a bright color and perfect texture.

Green peas are a healthy and adaptable ingredient that can effortlessly enhance your meals. They pack a punch with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them an excellent component of a balanced diet.

Here are some ways to incorporate green peas into your diet:

  1. Toss them in fried mushrooms to make matar mushroom masala.
  2. Add them to a vegetable medley for a mixed vegetable recipe.
  3. Combine them with cottage cheese and vegetables for a flavorful, aromatic, spice-infused, mixed paneer recipe.
  4. Cook peas with rice for a delicious, comforting rice dish.

Ingredients

To make green peas curry, you need these items:

ingredients for curried peas curry

Peas - Fresh, canned, or frozen. I use frozen peas for this green peas curry recipe as they are convenient and cook quickly. Use whatever is handy for you!

Vegetables - Onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and green chilies are the base for curry preparation. Dice them finely or use a chopper to cut them.

How to make curry with green peas

Heat the oil in a pan. Once hot, add cumin seeds and let them infuse their aroma. Stir in the garlic and onions, and cook them until they are slightly translucent.

Next, add ginger and all the spices. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes with chilli and cook until the masala (curry base) is soft and mushy, as shown in the image below.

Stir in the frozen peas directly from the freezer. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes to coat them with the masala. Add water and bring it to a boil. Cover with a lid and let it simmer on low heat for 5-8 minutes.

Adjust the spices and stir in a tablespoon of ghee. It's completely optional, but it boosts the flavor of peas. Garnish with cilantro and serve the hot green pea gravy with your favorite food!

  1. Serve pea curry over steamed cumin rice for a simple yet satisfying meal.
  2. Pair with bread like egg paratha, poori, appam, naan, roti, or plain or stuffed options such as aloo paneer paratha for a comforting meal.
  3. Serve it over quinoa cottage cheese, or fluffy couscous for a wholesome, protein-packed option.
  4. Pair it with grilled vegetables or stir-fried vegetables for a well-balanced meal.
  5. Stir into a tomato-based pasta sauce for a unique twist on curry-infused pasta recipes.
  6. These curried frozen peas complement well with omelets like Vietnamese omelette.

Leftover Ideas

  1. Toss with leftover steamed or boiled rice for a quick and delicious spiced, flavourful pea rice.
  2. Mix leftovers with mashed potatoes and use them as a filling for stuffed parathas.
  3. Toss with fried paneer to make a delicious Indian matar paneer recipe in just a few minutes.
  4. Add curried peas to chickpea flour batter and make flavorful savory pancakes.
  5. Blend with vegetable/chicken broth to create a curried pea soup.

Tips

  • Keep peas tender and vibrant by simmering for just the right amount of time.
  • Don't skip the spices, as they balance out the sweetness of the peas.
