Fresh peas vs. frozen peas
Nothing compares to fresh produce, but I still prefer using frozen peas as a fantastic alternative since they require no shelling and cook quickly.
There's no need to thaw them beforehand as they go straight into the pan and cook within minutes, ensuring a bright color and perfect texture.
Green peas are a healthy and adaptable ingredient that can effortlessly enhance your meals. They pack a punch with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them an excellent component of a balanced diet.
Here are some ways to incorporate green peas into your diet:
- Toss them in fried mushrooms to make matar mushroom masala.
- Add them to a vegetable medley for a mixed vegetable recipe.
- Combine them with cottage cheese and vegetables for a flavorful, aromatic, spice-infused, mixed paneer recipe.
- Cook peas with rice for a delicious, comforting rice dish.
Ingredients
To make green peas curry, you need these items:

Peas - Fresh, canned, or frozen. I use frozen peas for this green peas curry recipe as they are convenient and cook quickly. Use whatever is handy for you!
Vegetables - Onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and green chilies are the base for curry preparation. Dice them finely or use a chopper to cut them.

How to make curry with green peas
Heat the oil in a pan. Once hot, add cumin seeds and let them infuse their aroma. Stir in the garlic and onions, and cook them until they are slightly translucent.
Next, add ginger and all the spices. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes with chilli and cook until the masala (curry base) is soft and mushy, as shown in the image below.

Stir in the frozen peas directly from the freezer. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes to coat them with the masala. Add water and bring it to a boil. Cover with a lid and let it simmer on low heat for 5-8 minutes.

Adjust the spices and stir in a tablespoon of ghee. It's completely optional, but it boosts the flavor of peas. Garnish with cilantro and serve the hot green pea gravy with your favorite food!
