About the fresh plum chutney

Plums are known as aloo bukhara in Hindi, the Indian language. These are popular for their cooling properties and are best used in summer to beat the heat. Plums are small stone fruits with soft, juicy flesh and smooth outer skin. Stone fruits are fruits with a stone or a pit in them, which is nothing but the seed of the fruit. These are healthy fruit associated with several health benefits.

This plum and cilantro chutney/aloo bukhura coriander chutney is a sweet and tangy chutney prepared with fresh plums and cilantro without using sugar, preservatives, and oil. It is a unique chutney with fresh plums that goes perfectly with any dish as an accompaniment.

The recipe calls for onion, garlic, mint leaves, salt, and cumin seeds other than fresh plums and cilantro. Cilantro and mint leaves impart a brilliant color with refreshing flavor to the chutney, whereas onion, garlic, and chilies add depth and balance out the sweetness of the plums. Cumin seeds aid in digestion. So, overall, it is a blend of sweet, tangy, and refreshing herbs - a unique, delicious chutney combo of plums with fresh cilantro that is 100% worth a try!

I made this chutney with plums for the first time, and I was so impressed with its beautiful, attractive wine-red color plus mouth-watering taste that I decided to make it every week to get all the health benefits of plums in our daily lives. It is the ideal healthy way to include superfoods in our eating habits.

FAQ

Can I use dried plums for aloo bukhara chutney?

Yes! You can use dried plums (prunes) to make aloo bukhara chutney. But be sure to soak them in warm water for half an hour before using them to soften their skin.

How do I fix runny plum chutney?

Runny plum chutney occurs when there is excessive moisture in the chutney. So adding a teaspoon of ground peanuts or ground-roasted chana dal helps absorb the excess moisture in the chutney. Add a little at each time and check if it helps.

Tips

  1. Thoroughly wash and rinse plums, cilantro, and mint leaves to prevent dirt contamination.
  2. Use pitted plums with skin on them.
  3. Plums contain >80% of water, so water is not required to blend the ingredients. But if you find it hard, add a teaspoon of water.
  4. Avoid lemon or vinegar, as the chutney is already tangy.
  5. Add only a few mint leaves to avoid bitterness in the chutney.
