English and Hindi Names of Vegetables

    Types of Vegetables

There are wide varieties of vegetables available in the market. I have classified them based on their edible parts and food group.

So, based on edible parts, these can be categorized into 8 types:

    1. Flower vegetables are flower parts of the plant. Examples are broccoli, artichoke, cauliflower, etc.,
    2. Fruit vegetables are botanically classified as fruits like cucumber, tomato, eggplant, etc.,
    3. Stem vegetables grow above ground and have edible stems, e.g. asparagus. fennel, kohlrabi etc.,
    4. Tuber vegetables grow underground on the root. Example includes potato, cassava, sweet potato, etc.,
    5. Leafy vegetables are often known as greens, salad greens, or vegetable greens, leafy vegetables. These include spinach, cabbage, lettuce, etc.,
    6. Root vegetables grow underground, like carrots, radishes, ginger, etc.,
    7. Bulb vegetables grow just below the ground. An example includes onion, shallot, garlic, etc.,
    8. Pod and seeds are vegetables that contain seeds inside a pod, for example, peas, beans, lentils, etc.,

And, as food groups, vegetables can be grouped as:

    1. Dark-green vegetables are dark green leafy vegetables, for example, amaranth leaves, bok choy, and broccoli.
    2. Red and orange vegetables are red and orange vegetables, for example, carrots, red or orange bell peppers and sweet potatoes.
    3. Beans, Peas, and Lentils are black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, mung beans, pigeon peas, pinto beans, and split peas. This group does not include green beans or green peas.
    4. Starchy vegetables are veggies that contain starch, for example, breadfruit, burdock root, cassava, corn, jicama, lotus root, lima beans, plantains, white potatoes, water chestnuts, yam, and yucca.
    5. Others All other vegetables, for example, asparagus, avocado, bamboo shoots, beets, bitter melon, Brussels sprouts, cabbage (green, red, napa, savoy), cactus pads (nopales), cauliflower, celery, chayote, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, kohlrabi, luffa, mushrooms, okra, onions, radish, rutabaga, snow peas, summer squash, tomatillos, and turnips.

    ?

Nightshade vegetables belong to the family Solanaceae which contain small amounts of alkaloids, mainly solani. These vegetables include:
    - White potatoes,
    - Tomatoes,
    - Eggplant,
    - Bell peppers,
    - Cayenne pepper,
    - Paprika,
Nightshade vegetables are considered to aggravate inflammation in the body, thereby worsening chronic health conditions like arthritis, IBD etc. People sensitive to nightshade vegetables may experience gas, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and joint pain after eating them.

Is it necessary to wash vegetables?

Yes, washing vegetables with water before use is necessary as it removes any unwanted residues and germs from their surfaces and makes vegetables safe to consume. Avoid using chemicals. Wash with an adequate amount of water.

Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet that not provides us with nutrients but also prepares our body to fight against diseases. So include vegetables in your daily meal to get all the health benefits. Eat fresh and all types of veggies to get the best nutritional value of them.

I have tried my best to cover all the vegetables as far as possible. If you know of any vegetables I missed here, please let me know. I will update the table.
