If it is hard to know the name of vegetables in Hindi, this post on the name of vegetables in Hindi and English may help you remember them easily.

Vegetables are the parts of plants that are consumed by humans or other animals as food. In other words, vegetable refers to the edible pieces of the plant, like leaves, stems, roots, fruits, or seeds.
Below is the handy table with the English vegetable names on the left-hand side and the Hindi name of the vegetables on the right-hand side of the table. For ease, I have also included how you can spell veggie names in the Hindi language in the parenthesis on both sides of the table.

English and Hindi Names of Vegetables

Types of Vegetables

There are wide varieties of vegetables available in the market. I have classified them based on their edible parts and food group.

So, based on edible parts, these can be categorized into 8 types:

  1. Flower vegetables are flower parts of the plant. Examples are broccoli, artichoke, cauliflower, etc.,
  2. Fruit vegetables are botanically classified as fruits like cucumber, tomato, eggplant, etc.,
  3. Stem vegetables grow above ground and have edible stems, e.g. asparagus. fennel, kohlrabi etc.,
  4. Tuber vegetables grow underground on the root. Examples include potato, cassava, sweet potato, etc.,
  5. Leafy vegetables are often known as greens, salad greens, or vegetable greens, leafy vegetables. These include spinach, cabbage, lettuce, etc.,
  6. Root vegetables grow underground, like carrots, radishes, ginger, etc.,
  7. Bulb vegetables grow just below the ground. An example includes onion, shallot, garlic, etc.,
  8. Pod and seeds are vegetables that contain seeds inside a pod, for example, peas, beans, lentils, etc.,

And, as food groups, vegetables can be grouped as:

  1. Dark-green vegetables are dark green leafy vegetables, for example, amaranth leaves, bok choy, and broccoli.
  2. Red and orange vegetables are red and orange vegetables; for example, carrots, red or orange bell peppers, and sweet potatoes.
  3. Beans, Peas, and Lentils are black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, mung beans, pigeon peas, pinto beans, and split peas. This group does not include green beans or green peas.
  4. Starchy vegetables are veggies that contain starch, for example, breadfruit, burdock root, cassava, corn, jicama, lotus root, lima beans, plantains, white potatoes, water chestnuts, yam, and yucca.
  5. Others All other vegetables, for example, asparagus, avocado, bamboo shoots, beets, bitter melon, Brussels sprouts, cabbage (green, red, napa, savoy), cactus pads (nopales), cauliflower, celery, chayote, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, kohlrabi, luffa, mushrooms, okra, onions, radish, rutabaga, snow peas, summer squash, tomatillos, and turnips.

Health Benefits of Vegetables

Eating vegetables provides enormous health benefits. I have listed out some of these, but these are not limited to:

  • Veggies provide nutrition to your body as they are a good source of fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.
  • Vegetables are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals that help you fight against inflammation.
  • Veggies are heart-friendly superfoods that improve blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and thus reduce the risk of heart diseases.
  • These may prevent weight gain and promote weight loss as high in fiber and low in calories.

FAQs

How many vegetables should you eat every day?

The number of vegetables you need to consume depends on your age, sex, height, weight, and level of physical activity.
There are not any standard guidelines on the number of veggies one should eat but in general
- 1 cup (80g) of raw or cooked vegetables or vegetable juice,
- 2 cups (80g) of raw leafy salad greens are recommended as a daily vegetable serving size.
Whereas the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend on
- 2 ½ cups of vegetables (cup eq/day) that include
- 1 ½ cups dark-green vegetables (cup eq/wk)
- 5 ½ red and orange vegetables (cup eq/wk)
- 1 ½ cups beans, Peas, lentils (cup eq/wk)
- 5 cups starchy vegetables (cup eq/wk)
- 4 cups other vegetables (cup eq/wk)

What are nightshade vegetables
?

Nightshade vegetables belong to the family Solanaceae which contain small amounts of alkaloids, mainly solani. These vegetables include:
- White potatoes,
- Tomatoes,
- Eggplant,
- Bell peppers,
- Cayenne pepper,
- Paprika,
Nightshade vegetables are considered to aggravate inflammation in the body, thereby worsening chronic health conditions like arthritis, IBD, etc. People sensitive to nightshade vegetables may experience gas, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and joint pain after eating them.

Is it necessary to wash vegetables?

Yes, washing vegetables with water before use is necessary as it removes any unwanted residues and germs from their surfaces and makes vegetables safe to consume. Avoid using chemicals. Wash with an adequate amount of water.

Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet nourishing us with nutrients as well as preparing our body to fight against diseases. So include vegetables in your daily meal to get all the health benefits. Eat fresh and all types of veggies to get the full nutritional value out of them.
