What is fairy bread?
Fairy bread is a beloved Australian snack made with soft white bread, butter, and colourful sprinkles (hundreds and thousands). In this fun twist, I made fairy sandwiches with a sweet jam filling, perfect for birthdays, playdates, or anytime you need a bit of joy!

Ingredients
To make these fairy bread slices, you need the following:

- Bread: Use white sandwich bread to make these fairy treats.
- Jam: I love using strawberry jam with chunky bits for this recipe. It adds such a delicious fruity flavor! Feel free to use any jam you like.

How to make fairy bread sandwiches?
Cut into shapes
Take two slices of bread and place one on the other. Using cookie cutters, cut out the shapes. I use flower, star, and heart-shaped cutters for preparing these fairy bread treats (image below).

Apply jam
Spread the jam onto one cut-out bread slice using a knife (image below). Now place the other bread slice on top to make a sandwich.

Apply butter
Spread salted butter on the top of the sandwich.

Decoration
Next comes decoration time with sprinkles or hundreds and thousands!! You can apply hundreds and thousands by two methods:
Method 1: Dipping method (image below)
Hold the sandwich with the butter facing down the sprinkles on a plate. Dip the sandwich into the sprinkles. Apply gentle pressure with your fingers to the back of the sandwich to help the sprinkles spread evenly.

Pros:
- It is a quick and easy method to apply sprinkles.
- Uniformly applied sprinkles so enhanced aesthetic appeal.
- Zero wastage of the hundreds and thousands.
Cons:
- The Sandwich gets too much sweetness as sprinkles cover the whole surface.
- You cannot do any creative decoration!
Method 2: Spoon method (image below)
Apply the hundreds and thousands on top of the sandwich using a spoon. Make sure the spoon you use is dry. Prefer a small-sized spoon for less spillage.

Pros:
- You have more control over the sweetness (sprinkle as much as you want).
- Decorate the sandwich as you like - diagonally, on the sides, in the corners, in the centers, with patterns, etc.
Cons:
- There is a lot of sprinkles spillage, so this method leads to their wastage.
- It messes up the place.
Each method has its pros and cons. I like the dipping method. What's your favorite sprinkles method? Do let me know if you try any of these methods!

Variations
- Feel free to use whole-grain bread instead of sandwich white bread.
- For a lighter option, try margarine or mayonnaise. But be warned, it might not taste as indulgent.
- Consider cutting these sandwiches into triangles rather than other shapes if you are concerned about bread wastage.
- Add some desiccated coconut along with the jam, it tastes absolutely delicious, just like in lamington bites!
Equipment
I grabbed these big cookie cutters from my local supermarket - stars, hearts, and flowers are my favorites, but any shape you have will look adorable!
Storage
Store them in the fridge for at least 2-3 days. Do not leave them at room temperature for more than 3-4 hours as the butter may melt and sprinkles may fall apart.

Tips
- Use bread that's 2-3 days old. The perfect shapes will not appear in fresh bread, as the bread will tear apart when cut.
- Use salted butter to balance the sweetness of the recipe.
- Always use room-temperature, spreadable butter.
- Avoid melted butter.
- Make breadcrumbs from leftover bread (after cutting shapes) by drying it in the sun for a day and then grinding it.
- Make these sandwiches fresh on the day you plan for a party.

Can u use Ezekiel bread instead of white bread?
Abhi says
Yes, you can definitely use Ezekiel bread instead of white bread. It is a sprouted grain bread made from whole grains and legumes, so it’s more nutritious and has a denser, nutty flavor compared to white bread. It’s a healthy swap if you prefer!
