    What is fairy bread?

Fairy bread is white bread slices covered with butter and sprinkles (hundreds and thousands - the Australian term), usually served as triangles at children’s parties in Australia and New Zealand.

I have given a twist to this iconic Australian recipe by adding a little extra fun. I prepare this as a sandwich in different shapes using strawberry jam with strawberry chunks for filling, which tastes mind-blowing!! A perfect balance of sweetness and salt with a little strawberry chunk makes these sandwiches super yummy.

    2. Jam: For this recipe, I have used strawberry jam with strawberry chunks in it. It tastes so good. Use any jam.
    3. Butter: Use butter with salt to balance out the sweetness in the sandwiches.

To make this fairy bread recipe Australia, follow these steps:

    Step-1 Cut into shapes

    • Take two slices of the bread, and place one on the other.
    • Using cookie cutters, cut out the shapes. I use flower, star and heart-shaped cutters for preparing these fairy bread treats. (image below)
flower cutter placed on a bread slice

    Step-2 Apply jam

    • Spread jam onto one cut-out bread slice using a knife. (image below)
    • Now, place the other bread slice over it to make a sandwich.

    Step-3 Apply butter

Spread salted butter on the top of the sandwich.

sprinkles in a plate with a butter and jam sandwich slice

    Step-5 Decorations

Next comes decorations time with sprinkles or hundreds and thousands!! You can apply hundreds and thousands by two methods:

Method 1: Dipping method (image below)

    • Hold the sandwich with butter facing down the sprinkles on a plate.
    • Dip the sandwich into the sprinkles.
    • Apply gentle pressure with your fingers on the back of the sandwich to stick sprinkles uniformly onto it.
sandwich decoration using sprinkles dipping method

    Pros:

    • It is a quick and easy method to apply sprinkles.
    • Uniformly applied sprinkles, so more aesthetical appeal.
    • Zero wastage of the hundreds and thousands.

    Cons:

    • The Sandwich gets too much sweetness as sprinkles cover the whole surface.
    • You cannot do any creative decoration!

Method 2: Spoon method (image below)

    • Apply the hundreds and thousands on top of the sandwich using a spoon.
    • Be sure to use a dry spoon.
    • Prefer a small size spoon for less spillage.
Applying sprinkles on the bread slice using a spoon method

    Pros:

    • You have more control over the sweetness. (sprinkle as much as you want. )
    • Decorate the sandwich as you like, be it diagonally, sides, corners, centres, patterns, etc.,

    Cons:

    • Lots of sprinkles spillage, so this method leads to their wastage.
    • It messes up the place.

Make these sandwiches as many as you want! Fairy bread sandwiches are ready to serve!! Store in the fridge if you are making them ahead of time.

Let the kids enjoy these delicious rainbows treats!

Each method has its pros and cons. I like the dipping method. What's your favourite sprinkles method? Do share your feedback if you try any of these methods!

    Variations

    • You can also use whole grain bread instead of sandwich white bread.
    • If you are calorie conscious, try using margarine or mayonnaise, but I bet you will compromise on taste.
    • Consider cutting these sandwiches into triangles instead of shapes if you are concerned about the wastage of bread.
    • Love coconut meat? Use it in the filling.

    Equipment

I bought these cookie cutters from the local supermarket. These are big-size cookie cutters.
I use star, heart and flower-shaped cutters to cut the bread slices. Feel free to use whatever handy you have.

    Storage

    • You can store them in the fridge for at least 2-3 days.
    • Do not leave them at room temperature for over 3- 4 hours as the butter may melt and sprinkles may fall apart.

    Tips

    • Use 2-3 days-old bread. The perfect shapes will not come out in fresh bread as the bread will tear apart on using cutters.
    • Use butter with salt to balance out the sweetness of the sandwiches.
    • Always use room-temperature butter in a spreadable condition.
    • Avoid melted butter.
    • Make breadcrumbs with the leftover bread (after cutting shapes) by drying out in the sun for a day and then grinding it.
    • Make these sandwiches fresh on the day you are planning a party.
