Ingredients

To make this soy‑tomato glazed drumsticks, you need the following items:

ingredients for chicken drumsticks

For the chicken drumsticks, I usually go with skinless ones, but use what works best for you.

Prepare the green onions by removing the roots, washing the stalks, and chopping both the white and green parts. They bring a unique taste to the recipe and make a great garnish too.

If that pungent green onion kick is your favorite, don't miss this bottle gourd & green onion soup!

Feel free to use garlic paste if you like it. However, I prefer fresh garlic as it provides a richer flavor. If you have garlic chutney on hand, add some for an even bigger flavor punch!

For sauce, combine equal portions of soy sauce and tomato ketchup in a small mixing bowl. This sauce imparts a unique taste and color to the chicken drumsticks.

Salt and pepper for seasoning.

See the recipe card for quantities.

How to make weeknight chicken drumsticks

In a small mixing bowl, combine equal parts of soy sauce and tomato ketchup and set it aside to add in the last stage. This sauce will add flavor and color to the chicken legs.

Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickens. For a spicy twist, drizzle 2-ingredient chili oil or stir in a bit of red chilli chutney just before removing from the heat. Garnish with spring onions.

Serving Ideas

It tastes delicious with naan bread, roti, or flatbreads such as egg flatbread.

These go well with hot steamed cumin rice and lemon rice.

Serve with stir-fries and air-fried carrots- potatoes.

Serve with crispy garlic bread for a unique but surprisingly delicious pairing.

With chow mein masala for a flavorful fusion.

FAQs

Can I use chicken thighs or curry-cut pieces instead of drumsticks?

Yes! You can easily swap drumsticks with thighs or curry-cut chicken. Just adjust the cooking time slightly depending on the size of the pieces.

Do I have to use green onions?

Green onions give the dish its signature flavor, but you can replace them with regular onions if needed. The taste will be different but still delicious.

Can I use frozen chicken drumsticks?

Yes, but thaw them completely before cooking to ensure even cooking and better flavor absorption.

Can I prepare this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can cook it in advance. The flavors actually deepen after a few hours. Reheat on low heat before serving.

Tips

Don't overcook the chicken - drumsticks stay juicier when cooked on low to medium heat rather than high flame.

Sear first for better flavour - lightly browning the chicken at the start helps lock in taste before adding sauces or spices.

Notes

  1. Adjust the sauce quantity according to your taste preference for a lighter or stronger flavour.
  2. Since soy sauce already contains salt, add only a small amount of extra salt at first. You can always adjust later if needed, rather than risk making the dish too salty.
  3. For a spicy twist, drizzle my 2-ingredient chili oil or stir in a bit of red chilli chutney.
