Ingredients
To prepare this homemade Indian ice cream dessert, you will need only these 3 ingredients:

- Sweetened condensed milk - Sweetened condensed milk is ideal for this recipe because it provides all the sweetness you need, eliminating the need for extra sugar.
- Gulab Jamun - I use ready-to-eat Haldiram’s Gulab Jamun for this ice cream. It’s super convenient and easily available at most Indian grocery stores or in the Asian section of larger supermarkets. Feel free to use any brand or homemade gulab jamun, whatever you have on hand!
- Thickened cream - For that rich, creamy texture, use heavy or thickened cream with at least 30% fat content. This ensures your ice cream turns out luxuriously smooth and indulgent.

The first step in making Gulab Jamun ice cream is to lightly whisk the chilled cream. Next, add the sweetened condensed milk and whisk again with an electric mixer for about a minute or until well combined.
Then, add 5–6 Gulab Jamuns to the mixture and blend until you achieve a thick, creamy consistency (see image below).

Pour half of the ice cream mixture into a rectangular container. Chop a few Gulab Jamuns into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle them evenly over the layer.
Add the remaining ice cream on top, then scatter the rest of the chopped Gulab Jamuns over it. Gently smooth the surface with a rubber spatula. Cover the container with cling wrap and freeze overnight (see image below).

Scoop, garnish with pistachios, and enjoy this homemade ice cream with gulab jamun.

Serving Ideas

Create an Indian-inspired fusion bowl by combining this ice cream with falooda noodles, rose syrup, basil seeds, and jelly cubes.
Pair it with fresh tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, or lychee to complement its rich and aromatic flavors.
FAQ
I used ready-made Gulab Jamun of the Haldiram brand to make this ice cream. According to their label claim, these are prepared from wheat flour and semolina, which contain gluten, so this ice cream is not gluten-free.
The main reason Jamun ice cream may not set well is the presence of excess liquid, for example, if some sugar syrup from the Gulab Jamun was added by mistake. Another common reason is not freezing the ice cream for long enough.
Yes! Store-bought gulab jamun works perfectly for this recipe. Just make sure to drain any extra syrup so your ice cream doesn’t turn too watery.
This homemade ice cream stays good for up to 3–4 weeks if stored in an airtight container. Be sure to cover with a lid to prevent ice crystals.
Yes, you can skip condensed milk if you prefer a less sweet version. Try adding fresh cream or a splash of evaporated milk instead, but remember condensed milk adds richness and sweetness.

Tips
- Use chilled cream to make ice cream.
- No extra flavoring is added in this ice cream recipe, so the pure taste of Gulab Jamun stands out. But feel free to add a flavor of your choice if you’d like.
- Adjust the number of Gulab Jamuns according to your preferred level of sweetness.
- Crush or chop the Gulab Jamun into small pieces before mixing, especially if you’re not using an electric mixer.
- Cover the ice cream with a wrap before freezing to prevent ice crystal formation.
- Freeze overnight for the best gulab jamun ice cream flavor.
